Efforts to cut the traffic and reduce emissions by 50% could create a ‘zero-emission’ zone in capital city according to the latest government proposals.
The planned zone will be separate from the present London Congestion Charge and Ultra-Low Emissions Zone and will cover an area around the City and Barbican. The strict rules will force hauliers to use smaller vehicles and group delivers to comply.
Sceptical
Urban transport policy manager Denise Beedell is sceptical the targets are realistic. “While we applaud many aspects of the proposals – such as priority parking access for commercial vehicles – there are several other areas that need reconsidering. This is a premature move – zero emission vehicles are currently not commercially viable and greater investment is needed into their development”
Denise says that electric vehicle pricing must be considered as the costs are currently prohibitively high. She also says that the lack of charging stations will also make the proposals unworkable.
