Winter is coming: HGV drivers must prepare

Winter has arrived in earnest and with a cold snap expected soon, here’s some tips for HGV drivers to stay safe on the roads.

Check your lorry
Before any journey, HGV drivers should perform a thorough check of their lorry. Pay attention to:

  • Tyres wear, pressure and balance

  • Battery power and charging system

  • Window wipers are working correctly

  • Fluid levels topped up

  • Fully functioning lights

  • Exhaust clear of snow and ice

Bring the right equipment
Should a problem occur, drivers need the right equipment. Use this checklist before setting off:

  • De-icer/ice scraper

  • A shovel and a bag of salt or sand

  • Jump leads

  • A torch

  • A high visibility jacket

  • A warm blanket and warm clothing

  • Food and water

  • At least a half tank full of fuel at all times

Alter your driving style
Driving is very different in winter and too many drivers fail to adapt. Changing the way you drive is important:

  • Slow down – Most accidents occur because drivers are travelling too fast. This is especially dangerous for HGV drivers, so when you get behind the wheel, take time to become accustomed to how the vehicle handles on the road – it’s harder to control or stop on a road that is covered in snow or ice. Remember that the speed signs are intended for dry roads!

  • Allow extra space – Increase your stopping distance to allow time to react to the vehicles in front of you. During snowy and icy conditions, allow ten times the normal stopping distance.

And finally…check the weather
The weather not only alters how you drive, it can also lead to closed routes and snarl ups that you should try to avoid. Know the conditions and whether they are likely to change during the journey.
